The Physics & Architecture of PC Hardware Compatibility
Modern computer hardware compatibility extends far beyond whether a cable plugs in. It encompasses electrical transient power spikes, thermal dissipation thresholds, motherboard PCB clearance constraints, and bus bandwidth bottlenecks.
M.2 Physical Clearance
M.2 SSDs come in 2230, 2242, and 2280 millimeter lengths. More importantly, high-capacity drives (2TB+) often place NAND flash chips on both sides of the printed circuit board. Compact gaming laptops leave only 2.0 to 2.38 millimeters of underside clearance; forcing a double-sided drive into such a slot bends the motherboard traces, causing intermittent drive disconnections or catastrophic solder fracture under thermal expansion.
GPU Transient Spikes & PSU
Modern high-performance graphics cards (such as the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace and Blackwell architectures) exhibit microsecond power excursions up to 1.8 to 2.0 times their average thermal design power (TDP). An undersized or aging power supply will trip its internal Over-Current Protection (OCP) or Over-Power Protection (OPP), leading to spontaneous hard reboots during intense gaming sessions.
PCIe Lane Bandwidth Scaling
Each generation of PCI Express doubles the transfer bandwidth per lane. PCIe 3.0 delivers ~985 MB/s per lane (~3.9 GB/s on x4), whereas PCIe 4.0 delivers ~1.97 GB/s per lane (~7.8 GB/s on x4). While PCIe is designed to be fully backward-compatible, pairing a high-end Gen 4 drive with a Gen 3 motherboard caps sustained throughput to approximately 3,500 MB/s, though 4K random read latencies remain virtually identical.
